A moment of respect, please, for this man: who managed to propose with an engagement ring his girlfriend had unknowingly been wearing for the past year.
That sounds a bit confusing, right? Let us explain.
You know how most people want their proposals to be a surprise, partly for the romance but mostly to observe the other person’s gloriously embarrassing surprised reaction?
Well, Terry, a man from Australia, decided to take the surprise element up a notch. And he absolutely nailed it.
‘I had always loved the idea of giving someone a gift where they didn’t know its true value,’ Terry told metro.co.uk.
‘I also wanted to start doing wood carving.’
Terry decided to make his girlfriend, Anna, something special: a wooden necklace that secretly held an engagement ring tucked inside.
He found a ring, made the necklace, and gave it to Anna on the one year anniversary of their relationship.
She absolutely loved it, wearing the necklace every day and never taking it off.
‘There were some occasions where I was really worried,’ says Terry. ‘At one point, I thought she was going to trade it with a blacksmith at a market (the blacksmith loved the necklace, and she loved the blacksmith’s work) but luckily I didn’t need to crash tackle her.
‘My biggest moment of panic was when we went through airport security the first time.
‘I hadn’t thought about the fact that she might be asked to put it through the X-Ray, which could have very quickly turned into an airport security proposal!’
Luckily, the ring managed to stay inside the necklace unnoticed for a full year – until the day Terry wanted to pop the question.
The couple traveled together to Smoo Cave in Scotland, a place that had always been on their bucket list.
Before they went into the cave, Terry asked Anna if he could borrow the necklace to take some pictures of it next to the rocks.
He sneakily broke the seal with a knife, set up a camera on self-timer, and ran to Anna to hand her back her necklace.
Terry pulled the necklace from his pocket, knelt down, and broke upon the necklace to reveal the ring inside.
‘She stood there dazed for a second, trying to work out what was going on,’ said Terry, ‘and then it dawned and she said “yes”.
‘After she calmed down she suddenly stopped moving, stared at me and said “Wait… it’s been in there the entire time?!! I could have lost it you f***ing idiot!!”
‘She was quite a hilarious mix of happy and angry!’
